Malik Gaines and Alex Segade have been working together on performance projects since they first met in 1991 in the UCLA dorms. Under the name Superba Productions, Malik and Alex put on several plays and performances at places like The Wooden ‘O’ Theatre in West LA and Highways Performance Space in Santa Monica, and at Universities around California. After college, Malik studied writing at Cal Arts and Alex studied film at USC. Later, they formed My Barbarian with collaborator Jade Gordon, a band and performance organization that remains active in Los Angeles. In addition to their collaborative work, Malik continues to write for theater and contributes arts criticism to numerous publications, including Artext, Tema Celeste and Contemporary. Alex has continued to work in video and other visual media, having shown work in group exhibitions at American Fine Arts Co. and Cohan Leslie & Browne in New York; and Marc Foxx, Rosamund Felsen and LOW Gallery in Los Angeles.
